Group your rows by any column

You can now group your gallery cards or table rows by any column — department, category, status, region, whatever makes sense for your data.

So instead of one long list of 80 people, you get Engineering (12), Marketing (8), Sales (15)… each with their own section header. It works in both gallery and table view, on your public share page too.

Email and phone columns

Two new column types: Email and Phone. Values display as clickable links — tap an email to open your mail app, tap a phone number to call. Simple, but it makes a big difference when you’re using a Table as a directory or contact list.

What this unlocks

These two additions together open up a whole category of use cases we hadn’t fully leaned into:

• Team / employee directory — headshot, name, department (grouped), email, phone
• Vendor or supplier list — logo, company, category (grouped), contact email and phone

Upload tab

The Upload tab is designed for quick file intake. You can drag and drop files, arrange them before inserting in the order you want uploaded, switch between preview and list modes, and keep the queue organized before sending anything to the sheet.

The Library shows the most recently added files from Google Drive. It supports scrolling to load more items, so you can keep moving through recent files without constantly refreshing the view.

Settings tab

The uploader supports both preview and list layouts, with preview as the default. That makes it easier to switch between a visual file scan and a denser list view depending on the task.

OCR and translation

When a file supports OCR, the uploader can extract text directly. The recognized text modal is larger and includes translation options, which makes it more useful when working with scans, images, or PDFs in different languages.

Infinite loading

Library and Drive now load additional items as you scroll. That means fewer interruptions, less manual paging, and a smoother experience when working with larger Drive collections.

File upload was never enabled on the form

The form is restricted to a specific Google Workspace domain

Google Workspace admins can lock forms so that only users within their organization — people with a matching company or school email — can respond, let alone upload files. If you’re outside that domain, you’ll hit a wall even if you’re signed in to your own Google account. This is common with forms created by companies or universities for internal use.

Your file is too large or the wrong type

Google Forms caps individual uploads at 1 GB and limits accepted file types to whatever the form creator configured. If your file exceeds the limit or isn’t in an allowed format, the upload will fail after you’ve selected it — not before.

The form owner’s Google Drive is full

Why Google Forms Requires a Sign-In for File Uploads

The file upload field in Google Forms doesn’t store files on its own servers. Every uploaded file goes directly into the form owner’s Google Drive. To make that work, Google needs to know who the uploader is — so it can attribute the file in Drive and enforce its storage policies.

You get two separate data streams (form responses in Sheets, files in a Drive folder) with no link between them. You still have to match them up manually.

3. Share a Dropbox file request link

Dropbox has a “File Request” feature where anyone can upload to your Dropbox folder without an account. Same problem: the uploads have no connection to the form data you’re collecting.

4. Switch to another form builder

Most form builders (Typeform, Jotform, WPForms) do support file uploads without a sign-in. But they come with their own limitations — file size caps, storage on the builder’s servers, no automatic routing to your cloud storage, and per-form or per-response paywalls on the upload feature.

Before picking a workaround, it’s worth being clear about what the ideal solution actually does:

• No sign-in required for the person uploading
• Files go directly to your cloud storage — not a third-party server you’ll have to download from later
• Uploads are tied to the form response — you know exactly which submission a file belongs to
• Works with large files — not capped at 10 MB because of a shared hosting PHP limit
• Virus scans files before accepting them — especially important if files are coming from unknown submitters
• Can be shared with specific people — not just an open public link

Creating the form is straightforward.

The demo starts by replacing an existing Fluent Form on a WordPress site with a FileDrop Form. A new form is created and named something like “Active Merge Contact Form.” From there, the basic fields are already in place: name, email, and an upload field.

To make the form more useful, a paragraph field is added for the message itself. The submit button text is changed to “Send Message,” which makes the action clearer and more natural for the visitor. The form is then kept simple and clean, without extra page title text or unnecessary clutter.
